11. March 2011. The Tsunami washed away the houses. However, only the concrete foundations of the homes were left behind there. Now, I take part in a project to create a place for those who have lost their houses as a volunteer. When I saw the people stand talking together as staring at the remained concrete basement, I thought they could talk about their past, present and future, if there should be a small building.
We constructed a cabin on the concrete foundations with “Gassho” frames in 8 hours. “Gassho” is one of the traditional Japanese construction methods and the name comes from the shape of the hands with joining man’s palms together as if in prayer. I built the roof across the foundation with my feeling of requiem for the victims. This compact and simple composition makes it easier for them to convey how to construct the building, and induces small action of building; DIY. Even if the building completely rots away, the construction technique will live forever. I suggest that not only buildings but also architecture itself weave their memories and times of the place. In the following spring, 1 year later from the earthquake, the cabin with “Gassho” will be filled with flowers. I hope this modest architecture spread out everywhere by the people who visit or see the small cabin and finally new scenery will bloom on the remained foundations.

Daybed adapts to the user’s needs at all times: it serves as an armchair, a flat seat for contemplation, with an additional puff. Thanks to the modular elements it may quickly turn into a bed. It was designed on the basis of research conducted with the participation of artists in residence at the art centre in Dale in Norway. It is upholstered with finest quality leather, that ages beautifully. It is made to last long without going out of use or out of fashion.

157 +173 designers were formed in the autumn of 2009 in order to serve and facilitate their unceasing creative needs. The founders, Babis Papanikolaou and Christina Tsiragelou have both
studied architecture and they are also involved with various handmade structures, music and video art.
They have set their own studio in Thessaloniki designed with simplicity and functionality to fit their temperament. Their goal is to design and manufacture products of unique aesthetic value and quality. All ideas are meticulously tested and redrawn before they are finally converted into full scale objects, destined both for extensive production and/or for limited edition release, but always with the care of a handmade object.
The uniqueness of 157 + 173 designers’ work lies in the stylish combination of well known – designed forms that surround us with their contemporary and fresh look that makes each and every item special. The use of bare construction materials, wood and metal betrays the designers’intention not only to reveal each object’s origins and relationship with the natural environment, but also to situate them in the industrialized modern world. The choice of seemingly "cheap" materials is also essential to the objects’ aesthetic value as they are, often rather humorously, employed in order to inscribe a theatrical essence in their products.

babis papanikolaou has studied arts + architecture at University of Greenwich in London, from where he graduated in 2005. Coming back to his home town, Thessaloniki, he gathered practical
experience working in small scale and big scale architectural offices. At the same time, he is involved with music synthesis and video art.

christina tsiragelou has studied architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from where she graduated in 2007. Working as a partner to various well known architectural offices, both during her studies and after she graduated, she has been involved in the process of synthesis and construction. At the same time, she is dealing with modeling of prototype or work in progress building ideas, for various architectural offices.

The Old Market Library is built in a 100-year-old market building. The section for the library measures 3x9 metres internally, with a back yard facing a small canal. The roof and the walls were in very poor condition, and consequently any new element had to be self-supporting.
One of the main challenges for the community is the annual flooding during the rainy season. In this period the water can raise to around 50cm above floor level. Retaining the water would be very challenging and the solution was to elevate the calmer zones above the maximum flood level. This ensured that the library was usable throughout the flooded period.
Because of the height of the ceiling in the main room, there was an opportunity to construct an intimate loft space. The library is divided into two zones along its length; one side lets you move through the building along the bookshelves, while the other side is for reading and other passive activities.
Beyond the main room is a smaller space, the study. An old toilet in the corner was removed and has become a home for a small tree, which hopefully will have good fertilization in the years to come. In the back yard a pergola was constructed to protect against the blazing sun.
In this project it was important for us to use local and reused materials, which were already available to the community. The bookshelves are made of wooden boxes from one of CASE's earlier projects, while the cladding was assembled using old and decayed wooden pieces found in the immediate surroundings. The internal structure demanded a higher quality wood that had to be trusted to take the specific loads and span certain distances. These materials were bought at the local second hand wood shop.
The commercial centre of the Min Buri Market had already moved across the canal due to a fire in the late nineties. As the years have past by the community has diminished from a lively origo into an almost slum-like area. The land rights are uncertain and partly because of this the inhabitants are reluctant to invest in their homes.
For this project to be successful it was important to involve the inhabitants actively throughout the whole process, from inception to completion. Initially we mapped the needs within the community by holding regular meetings. These meeting ranged from drawing and building models, to even clearing garbage. As part of a survey we interviewed people in the area about their views on the community, its past, present and future. Aside from introducing ourselves to the community we wanted a deeper understanding of the situation that they lived in.
It wasn’t always easy getting everyone involved, especially the adults. However when the project became more tangible this completely changed. We soon had a regular group that worked with us every day. They began to develop an attachment to the library, a sense of achievement and pride; something we feel was a premise for the library to function in the long term.
For TYIN, this project wasn’t only about the refurbishment of the old Market Library; it was also to strengthen the passion in the neighbourhood. The refurbishment was a demonstration of what can be achieved by the inhabitants themselves, through own initiative, using local inexpensive materials and their own knowledge.

The site is located in a residential area developed on a gentle perch in Hiroshima, overlooking a far view of the Inland Sea and Miyajima. The land of this area is developed into platforms form with several levels. The architecture was requested to have a view over the roof of the neighboring house, standing one level lower, and to consider security, for the site is located at the edge of the residential area, and to leave some space for extension when the client opens a small shop in the future.
To respond to the requests, the house is lifted from the ground. Like a bird’s nest, it called up architecture’s primary function of relief from disturbance. The house is open to the view and yet protected from the fear and environment. Slab and roof consists of one continuous plate. The variations of circulation and diverse spatial relations were achieved by placing a penetrating staircase. The extended plate made possible the future extension and softened the impression from the ground level. Spandrel wall changes its height accordingly to the thickness of slab. Together with the slab, the spandrel wall creates the continuous but various environments.

The two-floor wooden construction lies directly above a yard with a roofed entrance area which curves in an abrupt slope. The circumferential and vertical silver fir facade not only serves as a filter but also almost imperceptibly directs views to the carefully selected outlooks. The narrow, slightly and both-sidedly bent ground plan follows both the course of the road and slightly bends the garden side towards the south. The plan is developed around the central staircase connected with an infrastructure complex, containing a kitchen, bathrooms and a storage room. The energy concept is based on the passive house standard. The low quantity of the remaining energy required for hot water processing and heating is being provided via district heating from the heat pump of the neighbouring house. A controlled and central ventilation system provides an optimal air quality and minimal heat losses.
